Do you have Artificial Intelligence (AI) discussions at Board Level?

Jesper Skou

By deploying the right AI technology, your business may gain the ability to save time and money by automating and optimizing routine processes and tasks, increase productivity and operational efficiencies, make faster business decisions based on outputs from cognitive technologies.

At present, I am working as a board professional and trusted advisor within the aviation and drone (UAV) industry. I am working for several companies with digital transformation, strategy, global growth, and investments/investors for SME.

During some of my board meetings, implementation and use of AI discussions have taken place. Surveys show that more than two-thirds of boards intend to approve the implementation of AI in the coming years, based on AI’s ability to influence company key areas such as customer service, operations, and support functions.

Including myself as a board member, AI is in general undermined by a shortfall in knowledge and understanding at the board level. Many organizations and boards lack the knowledge and skills to ensure the successful implementation of AI.

Despite having the power to assess and approve AI in organizations, a proportion of boardrooms have failed to take advantage of potential opportunities due to a lack of understanding about Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning.

From my point of view, AI is becoming more and more mature, and it is important for boards to understand how AI can fit into the company’s strategy and digital transformation.

After being frustrated for some time, not knowing the high-level content of AI, I decided to join a program at Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. The program “AI Applications for Growth” is developed for professionals seeking to enhance their skills in AI, and to look at how established companies - as well as start-ups - are putting AI to work to disrupt industries and gain a competitive edge.

Already now, I feel a lot more comfortable with AI decisions at board meetings and discussions with the executives of the companies that I am working with.

All the best with future AI discussions.
