OBSERVATIONS ON THE IMPACT OF WORLD
POLITICAL POLARIZATION ON GLOBAL COMPANIES
AND GLOBAL BUSINESSES

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the rules-based international order led by the United States has governed global political and economic relations.  In 2001 and 2003, no country hindered the United States when it decided to invade Afghanistan and Iraq.  It’s a different world today, and the rules-based international order seems to be fraying.  Countries that once cooperated in sanctioning North Korea and Iran have now joined together to confront the United States and its allies and partners.  In October 2023, a regional conflict in the Middle East became a global logistics headache for businesses when the Houthis began targeting ships in the Red Sea.  Businesses need to be prepared because conflicts that spill over to impact global trade and business will become increasingly frequent in a fragmenting world.
