Speakers/Consultants: Brian Van Hook
Brian is the Regional Director of Florida SBDC (FSBDC) at Florida International University (FIU). The center is a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) resource partner focused on helping start and grow businesses based in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. FSBDC at FIU’s team of business specialists provides quality one-on-one business consulting and training to help entrepreneurs grow and succeed in their businesses local and also with international reach. FSBDC at FIU was recently named the 2023 SBA National Small Business Development Center of the Year.
Van Hook has almost 20 years of experience with local economic development, entrepreneurship, and small business issues. Before joining FIU, Brian was Policy Director on the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship, overseeing research and legislative activities. Previously, he served as a Senate Legislative Assistant advising on issues related to Commerce, Technology, International Trade, Economic Development, and Small Business. Lastly, Van Hook also worked at the U.S. Department of Commerce in the Office of Technology Policy. In these roles, Van Hook has worked on both creating national policies and assisting individual businesses in the areas of accessing Federal programs and agencies, disaster preparedness, access to capital, and technology. Brian received his M.S. in International Affairs from Florida State University and his B.A. from Louisiana State University.
Lorna is the Assistant Director for the Florida Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Florida International University (FIU). In this role, Lorna oversees the center's budget, manages financial performance related to grants, and ensures the smooth operation of center activities.
She has a career spanning 16 years in Higher Education including responsibilities in diverse roles that have taken her across the globe. She started her journey in 2007 at Long Island University, Global, serving as the Director of the Independent Research & Internship Semester. During her tenure, she established impactful partnerships and agreements with universities, governments, and NGOs in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Spain, China, Australia, Bali, South Africa, and other countries.
In 2015, Lorna transitioned to Miami to join Shorelight Education as Academic Director, where she played a pivotal role in developing academic programs in partnership with FIU. Shorelight Education specializes in collaborating with leading universities to enhance accessibility and success for international students. Currently, Lorna plays a vital role in the award-winning consulting and administrative team at FIU. Lorna received a B.A. in International Affairs from Florida State University and a PhD from Universidad Nacional.
Shelly Bernal Florida SBDC at FIU consultant
Shelly Bernal is a Florida SBDC at FIU consultant who understands the ways of both big business and small business. As an international business development manager for two Fortune 500 companies, she advised U.S. food manufacturers on international market expansion and international logistics. She also launched and operated her own small business in South Florida. Shelly earned a bachelor's in marketing from the University of North Texas and an MBA from the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administracion in Caracas.

Edmundo, is a former Global executive at Citi (Citigroup), at Citi he was a Division Chief Technology Officer, one of seven globally, responsible for driving the strategic direction and investments in information technology, risk management and information security for Citi’s businesses, spread across 122 countries.
Edmundo was responsible for architecting and developing several global risk management programs at Citi. He is one of the founding members of a Citi initiative launching an internet branchless bank during the early days of the internet.
He gained deep insights to the Venture Capital (VC) arena by advising a NYC VC that was focused on startups that leveraged Microsoft products and digital media.
Edmundo started his career with Amex’s Latin American Division as a software developer, his last assignment was as an "internal consultant" focused on performance improvement.
